Why Stay in Edinburgh?
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world's largest arts festival, transforming Scotland's capital into a month-long celebration of theatre, comedy, music, and performance. Over 3,000 shows across 300 venues β from grand theatres to converted shipping containers β offer an embarrassment of artistic riches every August.
Hotels on or near the Royal Mile put you in the heart of the action, surrounded by street performers, pop-up venues, and the medieval atmosphere of Edinburgh's Old Town. The Pleasance and Bristo Square area concentrates many major venues. The New Town, just downhill, offers elegant Georgian hotels with a slightly calmer atmosphere.
Edinburgh hotel prices during the Fringe are at their annual peak, with many properties requiring minimum stays. Accommodation in Leith (Edinburgh's waterfront neighbourhood), Stockbridge, or Morningside offers better value with excellent bus connections to the city centre. University halls of residence also become available during August.
The Fringe exists alongside the Edinburgh International Festival a more curated programme of world-class classical music, opera, and theatre, as well as the Edinburgh Book Festival, Art Festival, and the spectacular Military Tattoo at Edinburgh Castle. August in Edinburgh is arguably the world's greatest cultural month.
