Why Stay in Bavaria?
Bavaria in autumn is a fairy tale come to life. The rolling foothills of the Alps blaze with colour as beech and larch forests turn gold and copper against a backdrop of snow-dusted peaks. Neuschwanstein Castle, perched on its crag above a forest of blazing maples, looks even more dreamlike in autumn than in summer — which is saying something for the inspiration behind Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle.
Lake Königssee, nestled between sheer mountain walls in the Berchtesgaden National Park, reflects the autumn colours in its emerald waters. An electric boat ride to the St. Bartholomä Church, with its red onion domes framed by golden mountains, is one of Europe's most scenic autumn experiences. The Partnach Gorge near Garmisch-Partenkirchen provides a dramatic walk through a narrow canyon with autumn foliage clinging to the cliffs above.
Hotels in Füssen (the closest town to Neuschwanstein), Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and Berchtesgaden provide excellent bases for autumn exploration. Traditional Bavarian guesthouses offer warm hospitality, wood-panelled rooms, and hearty breakfasts. Larger towns like Innsbruck (just across the Austrian border) and Munich offer wider hotel selections with easy access to the countryside.
Autumn in Bavaria coincides with the end of Oktoberfest and the beginning of the cosy Gemütlichkeit season. Bavarian beer halls serve seasonal Märzen brews, restaurants feature game dishes and wild mushrooms, and the first mountain snowfalls create a magical contrast with the valley's autumn colours. Hiking trails are quieter than summer and the clear autumn light is perfect for photography.
